From purchase to registration. VIN inspection, duty, ZIMRA release, ZINARA. All handled.

Zimbabwe Vehicle Duty Calculator

Enter your vehicle details for an instant duty breakdown. Estimates are indicative. Send us the invoice for an exact figure.

Estimates only. Actual duty depends on ZIMRA classification, engine size and current exchange rates. Always confirm with a licensed clearing agent before importing.

The Three Questions Everyone Asks First

How much is the duty?
Sedans and hatchbacks: 40 percent customs duty. SUVs and double cabs: 60 percent. Commercial single cabs: 25 percent. Add 15 percent VAT. Vehicles over 5 years old add a 35 percent surtax. South African origin vehicles with the correct Certificate of Origin pay 20 percent instead of 40 on sedans. Use the calculator above for an instant figure.
How long?
48 to 72 hours from arrival at Beitbridge, Plumtree or Forbes Mutare. This includes VIN inspection, ZIMRA valuation, duty payment, and release. We pre lodge your entry before the vehicle arrives.
What do I do?
Send us the vehicle details and purchase price. We send a full duty estimate within 4 hours. You approve. We handle the rest from purchase to registration.

Under SI 59 of 2026, vehicles 10 years or older cannot be imported into Zimbabwe. Vintage vehicles 25 years or older are exempt with a special Import Licence. We confirm eligibility before your vehicle ships.

From Purchase to Registration

Importing a vehicle is more complex than importing general cargo. The duty calculation depends on body type, engine size, age and origin. The inspection is physical. The valuation is often re assessed by ZIMRA. And the vehicle has to be roadworthy and registered before it can be driven.

Most people importing a car for the first time do not know where to start. Most people importing their second car know exactly what went wrong the first time. Both come to us for the same reason: they want the process handled correctly, in one go, without surprise costs.

George Steward manages the full process for every vehicle import:

  • Duty calculation before purchase, so you know the total cost upfront
  • Import Licence application for vehicles 10 years or older. We advise on eligibility before you buy, because the permit is not guaranteed.
  • Police clearance verification for South African origin vehicles
  • Freight booking if the vehicle is coming from Japan, the UK or the UAE
  • Arrival handling at Beitbridge, Plumtree, Forbes Mutare or Chirundu
  • VIN inspection with ZIMRA
  • Duty payment on your behalf
  • ZIMRA release and customs documentation
  • ZINARA registration assistance

One point of contact from the moment you buy to the moment you drive.

How Vehicle Duty Works in Zimbabwe

Vehicle duty in Zimbabwe is calculated on the total value of the vehicle plus insurance and freight. That combined figure is what ZIMRA uses for assessment. It is not just what you paid the seller.

Vehicle type Standard rate SADC rate with Certificate of Origin
Sedan or hatchback40%20%
SUV or double cab60%30%
Commercial single cab25%15%
Electric vehicle25%15%

Engine size also matters. ZIMRA classifies vehicles by cylinder capacity. Smaller engines attract lower duty bands within each vehicle category. The categories are:

  • Under 1,000 cc
  • 1,001 to 1,500 cc
  • 1,501 to 2,500 cc
  • 2,501 to 3,000 cc
  • Over 3,000 cc

The exact rate within each band depends on the vehicle body type. Our calculator above handles this. Send us the invoice for an exact figure.

Worked example: 3 year old SUV, rest of world origin

Total landed value: USD 22,000

Customs duty: 60% × 22,000 = USD 13,200

Surtax: none (under 5 years)

VAT: 15% × 35,200 = USD 5,280

Total duty and taxes: USD 18,480

Same SUV, South African origin with Certificate of Origin

Customs duty: reduced SADC rate

Surtax: none

VAT: 15% on the reduced total

The saving is significant because of one document. That is why we check the Certificate of Origin before your vehicle leaves the seller.

Payment in ZIG

ZIMRA duty and VAT can be paid in Zimbabwe Gold at the bank rate of the day. The ZIG equivalent is calculated at the official rate published by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe on the date of payment. We confirm the rate at the time of clearing and give you the exact ZIG figure before you pay. Payment in USD is also accepted.

The 10 Year Vehicle Rule, Explained

Under Statutory Instrument 59 of 2026, vehicles 10 years or older from their year of manufacture cannot be imported into Zimbabwe. This is a hard rule. There is no workaround for most importers.

Exemptions exist for these categories:

  • Vintage vehicles 25 years or older, with specific characteristics: representative of their era, retaining original features, well maintained, limited production, or of historical importance. Requires an Import Licence from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
  • Returning residents who owned the vehicle outside Zimbabwe for at least 12 months and have been outside Zimbabwe for 2 years or more
  • Diplomats returning from posting outside Zimbabwe
  • Inherited vehicles from deceased estates
  • Immigrants taking up permanent residence or employment in Zimbabwe

Special permit from the Minister. If your vehicle does not fall into these categories but has significant historical or cultural importance, you can apply to the Minister of Industry and Commerce for a special permit. This is a case by case process, and the permit is not guaranteed. We advise on eligibility before you commit to a purchase.

If you are not in one of these categories, and the vehicle was manufactured 10 or more years ago, it cannot be cleared through Zimbabwe customs. It will be refused entry.

We check the year of manufacture before you commit to a purchase. If the vehicle is 9 years old and about to turn 10, we tell you the exact month the window closes. That way you can decide with accurate information.

Importing a Vehicle from South Africa

South Africa is the most common origin for vehicles imported into Zimbabwe. It is also the origin where the biggest duty savings are available.

Because South Africa is part of the SADC regional trade agreement, vehicles originating there attract reduced import duty when accompanied by a valid Certificate of Origin. Duty on sedans drops from 40 percent to 20 percent. On a USD 22,000 vehicle, that is a saving of USD 4,400 before VAT.

Here is what you need from your South African dealer or seller:

  • The vehicle's original registration book
  • The Certificate of Origin, issued by an authorised body in South Africa
  • A commercial invoice showing the sale price
  • Police clearance stamped by the Vehicle Theft Squad. Required for all vehicles registered in Southern Africa. Valid for 14 days. We verify it before the vehicle ships.
  • ITAC export permit, required for every vehicle exported from South Africa. Application is made to ITAC on Form IE362. Processing takes a minimum of 2 working days.

Most South African dealers know the Certificate of Origin requirement and can issue it quickly. Some do not, especially smaller dealers and private sellers. If they cannot provide one, we tell you before you buy.

We check every Certificate of Origin and police clearance for accuracy. The certificate must match the invoice exactly. If the vehicle model, VIN, or value on the certificate does not match, ZIMRA applies full duty. We catch these problems before your vehicle crosses the border.

What Happens When Something Goes Wrong

Vehicle imports go wrong in specific ways. The year of manufacture is older than expected. The valuation is re assessed by ZIMRA at a higher figure. The Certificate of Origin is rejected. The police clearance has expired. Every importer has heard these stories.

Here is how we handle them.

If ZIMRA re assesses the value of your vehicle

ZIMRA has its own valuation database. Sometimes the invoice value is accepted. Sometimes it is not. If ZIMRA raises the value, we present evidence: the original invoice, comparable sales, market data. If ZIMRA still insists on their figure, we tell you immediately and you decide whether to proceed or appeal.

If the year of manufacture is disputed

ZIMRA checks the VIN against manufacturer databases. If the year on the invoice does not match the manufacturer record, we identify the discrepancy before the vehicle ships, not after.

If the Certificate of Origin is rejected

This is the most expensive problem. Without a valid certificate, duty jumps from 20 to 40 percent on sedans. We check the certificate against the invoice and the VIN before shipping. If it is not acceptable, we tell you before the vehicle leaves.

If the police clearance has expired

Police clearances are valid for 14 days. If yours has expired before the vehicle reaches the border, we advise on how to obtain a fresh one. This happens more often than people expect on slow shipments.

If the vehicle arrives with undisclosed damage

If the vehicle arrives with damage that was not declared by the seller, we take photos on arrival and document it. If you have transit insurance, we start the claim.

If the vehicle is 10 years or older

We cannot clear it under SI 59 unless you qualify for an exemption or obtain a special permit from the Minister. Re export is expensive. This is why we check first.
